When you use your Apple ID to sign in to the iTunes Store, App Store, or iBooks Store for the first time, you're asked to enter a payment method so that you can purchase items from the store. Follow these steps if you don't want to associate a payment method with your account.

The Apple Watch will never replace your iPhone.

This is not a MacBook for your arm.

The screen is tiny.

It has no keyboard.

It’s not personal; 
it’s passive.

I’ve never spent more than a few seconds at a time interacting with my Apple Watch. If I need to perform a task of actual consequence, I use my phone or computer.

And that’s the idea.

It lets you separate the wheat from the chaff, and respond accordingly. You’re never going to spend hours or even minutes laboring over your Apple Watch, because it’s not a personal computer -- it’s a passive one.

But you can send your heartbeat to your loved ones! And they can feel it!

Thing #2:

Battery life isn't a problem.

When the Apple Watch was announced last fall, there was little mention of battery life. I assumed this meant the battery life was terrible, otherwise Apple would have been singing its praises from day one. I was wrong. The battery works great.

As I said before, the Apple Watch is a passive device. If you’re trying to catch up on the latest episodes of Silicon Valley using your Apple Watch, you’re doing it wrong. The Watch lurks quietly in the background, meaning it’s not doing a lot of processing most of the time. Unless you intentionally spend several hours bonking the screen with your angry little sausage fingers, you’re never going to drain the battery. 

So, don’t worry about range anxiety -- running out of battery is still your phone’s job.

Thing #3:

The Taptic Engine could mean the death of the ring tone.

“Taptic Engine” is Apple’s fancy word for the thing that vibrates. It produces highly tuned vibrations which mimic the sense of being tapped on the wrist.

I’ve got “prominent haptic” enabled on my Watch, which taps my wrist a few seconds before I get an alert. This means that a few seconds prior to receiving a text message, I get a little nudge on my wrist letting me know that it’s about to arrive. The arrival of the message coincides with my eyes hitting the screen, and it works really well. It also gives me different types of taps when following driving directions. The tap to turn left feels different from the tap telling me to turn right.

Smartwatches aside, I really want haptic technology to succeed, because it eliminates the need for ringtones. I don’t need to hear a specific sound to differentiate my phone from the person sitting next to me, because it’s vibrating my wrist, not theirs. If we can all feel our devices, there’s no longer a need for an entire room to experience an alert, only the person receiving it.

Before the invention of the cell phone, the most obnoxious noise the human body could produce usually trumpeted the arrival of a cloud of methane. In today’s age of awful-ways-we-overtly-express-ourselves, bodily expulsions have become secondary to shrieking cell phones. There’s a notion in pop culture that AI might one day rise up against us, and that our own technology could hurt us more than we could ever hurt ourselves. Because of ringtones, that idea has already come to fruition. Because your ringtone is worse than my farts. Because your Taylor Swift is worse than my bum tornadoes.


We’ve reached a new apogee of awfulness, but it’s time to turn this ship around. Haptic: release us from our ringtones. Let the farts run free.

The Crown is useless.

The crown serves its purpose well as a button. You press it to select things. Hooray for buttons.

But as a scroll wheel, the crown is useless. It works fine, I just always end up scrolling up and down using my finger. It certainly feels good to use the crown. It makes me feel like a mountaineer triangulating the last-known location of a rare, evasive mountain goat, which is pretty cool. Mountain goats are pretty cool.

But the novelty wears off, and I always revert back to using those limber, plentiful, pointy little hot dogs dipped in protein also known as fingers.

I say ignore the crown. Work those hot dogs.

Apple Inc's new wireless headphones could be a problem for recyclers, according to an electronics firm that took apart the device to review its component parts.

Apple has been promoting a more environmentally conscious image for the company after having come under fire in the past for constructing its devices so tightly that their components can be difficult to cost-effectively disassemble for recycling.

But Apple's latest 4-gram wireless headphones, or AirPods, have glued-in tiny lithium batteries that make recycling difficult, said Kyle Wiens, chief executive of iFixit, the company which took apart the AirPods and has previously analyzed other Apple products.

"They're basically saying this is the future of headphones," said Wiens. He estimates Apple has sold 1.4 billion pairs of iPhone and iPod headphones, weighing about 31 million pounds. Given that the iPhone 7 ships without a traditional headphone jack, AirPods may signal Apple's future.

"There could easily be a billion of these things over the next 10 years," Wiens said.

Apple has said that the $159 (roughly Rs. 10,794) AirPods can be returned to the company for recycling. A spokesman declined to comment further on recycling the devices.

The headphones, which Apple released last week after a one-month delay, have garnered positive reviews.

The AirPods contain three lithium-ion batteries, one in each pod and one in an accompanying charging case.

Recyclers can shred wired headphones and send them to a smelter that will melt them down for the copper inside. But the lithium-ion batteries in AirPods cannot be shredded because they could catch fire while being destroyed.

The AirPods carry regulatory markings that say they are not intended to be thrown away in the trash and should be disposed of as electronics waste.

Willie Cade, CEO of Chicago-based PC Rebuilders & Recyclers, who was briefed on the AirPods' construction by iFixit, said the labor involved in removing the batteries would make it hard to cost-effectively recover any of the materials from the devices.

"I can't do it by hand. It's cost prohibitive," Cade said, adding that the AirPods would need to go into a shredder, but that "there's a relatively high risk of fire".

SOA record and SPF record

What is a SOA Record?

An SOA record is a Start of Authority. Every domain must have a Start of Authority record at the cutover point where the domain is delegated from its parent domain. For example if the domain mycompany.com is delegated to DNSimple’s DNS servers, we must include an SOA record for the name mycompany.com in our authoritative DNS records. We add this record automatically for every domain that is added to DNSimple and we show this record to you as a System Record in your domain’s Manage page.

Here is an example of the content from an SOA record:

The SOA record includes the following details:

• The primary name server for the domain, which is ns1.dnsimple.com or the first name server in the vanity name server list for vanity name servers.
• The responsible party for the domain, which is admin.dnsimple.com.
• A timestamp that changes whenever you update your domain.
• The number of seconds before the zone should be refreshed.
• The number of seconds before a failed refresh should be retried.
• The upper limit in seconds before a zone is considered no longer authoritative.
• The negative result TTL (for example, how long a resolver should consider a negative result for a subdomain to be valid before retrying).

For the moment, these values cannot be configured by you.

What is an SPF Record?

An SPF record is a Sender Policy Framework record and is used to indicate to mail exchanges which hosts are authorized to send mail for a domain . It is defined in RFC 4408 and clarified by RFC 7208.

SPF Record Format

SPF records are typically defined using the TXT record type. There is also an SPF record type, however it is deprecated and thus you should always have at least the TXT record definition present, even if you use the SPF type.

SPF records are defined as a single string of text. Here is an example record:

v=spf1 a mx ip4:69.64.153.131 include:_spf.google.com ~all

The SPF record always starts with the v= element. This indicates the SPF version that is used. Right now the version should always be spf1 as this is the most common version of SPF that is understood by mail exchanges.

Following the version indicator are one or more terms. These define the rules for which hosts are allowed to send mail from the domain or provide additional information for processing the SPF record. Terms are made up of mechanisms and modifiers. The following mechanisms are defined:

• all
• include
• a
• mx
• ip4
• ip6
• exists

The `ptr` type is also defined but should not be used.

There are currently two modifiers defined:

• redirect
• exp

SPF Mechanisms

The following mechanisms define what IP addresses are allowed to send mail from the domain:

• a
• mx
• ip4
• ip6
• exists

A mail server will compare the IP address of the sender against the IP addresses defined in the mechanisms. If the IP address matches one of the mechanisms in the SPF record then follow the result handling rule. The default handling rule is + or pass.

The include mechanism allows you to authorize hosts outside of your administration by specifying their SPF records.

The all mechanism matches any address. This is usually used as the last mechanism which defines how to handle any sender IP that did not match the previous mechanisms.

All mechanisms may specify qualifiers for how to handle a match. As previously mentioned, the default handling rule is pass, which is the same as the + qualifier. Other qualifiers that may be specified include - for fail, ~ for soft fail, and ? for neutral. If a mechanism matches and specifies - (fail) then

SPF Modifiers

Modifiers are name/value pairs (separated by an = sign) that provide additional information. Modifiers should appear at the end of the SPF record. A modifier may not appear more than once and unrecognized modifiers are ignored.

The redirect modifier is used to point to another SPF record to use for processing. This is used when you have multiple domains and want to apply the same SPF content across those multiple domains. Redirects should only be used if you control both domains, otherwise an include is used.

The exp modifier is used to provide an explanation in case of a - (fail) qualifier is present on a mechanism that is matched.

Note that we currently do not support modifiers in our SPF editing UI, but you may always add them if you are managing your SPF TXT record directly.

SPF Record Limitations

Each fully-qualified name may have at maximum one SPF record, defined as a TXT record or as an SPF record type.

Although the SPF record type is deprecated, it is still supported by DNSimple name servers at this time. In the future we may discontinue serving SPF records, so you should always have a TXT record whose content that is the same as the record using the SPF type.

There are various limitations to the number of items and lookups permitted in an SPF record:

• SPF records may have more than 10 mechanisms that require DNS lookups. These are the include, a, mx, ptr, and exists mechanisms.
• When evaluating the mx mechanism, the number of MX records queried is included in the overall limit of DNS lookups. Additionally, each mx mechanism must not result in querying more than 10 address records.
• The ptr mechanism is also included in the overall limit and each ptr must not result in querying more than 10 address records.

Tips for SPF Records

Since you may only have one SPF record per fully-qualified name, if you need to add additional modifiers you should add them to your existing SPF record if it is present.

SPF records are most often specified on your naked domain name. If you find that you need to exceed the number of modifiers allowed in a single SPF record, then you may need to send some of your messages from subdomains below your naked domain. For example, if a third-party SaaS sends mail on your behalf, you may need to send email from something.yourdomain.com for that provider. This is especially true if you have multiple SaaS providers that send email on your behalf.
